Feudi di San Gregorio is at the forefront of a winemaking revolution that has swept the historic Campania wine region in a fresh new direction. The estate’s progressive take on viticulture and uncompromising commitment to quality has ignited a welcome revitalization of the regional wine industry in a trend that marks a radical departure from the past.

Situated in the tiny village of Sorbo Serpico in Campania’s Irpinia region, this highly acclaimed estate was established by the Capaldo and Ercolino families in 1986. Over the past 25 years, Feudi di San Gregorio has emerged as a major success story in a region that, for many years, was locked in a virtual winemaking holding pattern.

Feudi di San Gregorio has aggressively tapped into the enormous potential of Campania’s unique terroir and ancient varietals by placing a thoroughly modern spin on indigenous grapes such as Fiano di Avellino, Greco di Tufo and Aglianico. Feudi di San Gregorio obtains its grapes from the finest vineyards set in the rolling hills of the Irpinia region, located in close proximity to Mount Vesuvius. The volcano’s legendary eruptions have laden the sandstone and marl soil with mineral-rich deposits of volcanic ash, forming a unique composition that imparts highly distinctive aromas and flavors in the grapes.

Thanks to the layout of the local terrain and predominant southerly and westerly winds that bring excellent levels of rainfall to the area, Irpinia boasts a microclimate quite different from the rest of southern Italy. The region is much cooler and more stable, allowing for slow maturation of the fruit and creating great consistency in the wines.

Recognizing that a keen understanding of climatic conditions is indispensable to the successful cultivation of vines, Feudi di San Gregorio has invested extensively in state-of-the-art technology. Each of the estate’s vineyards is equipped with a solar-powered meteorological station that gathers data continuously. By closely monitoring the environment, the estate is actively practicing eco-compatible viticulture, reducing the need for artificial methods, fertilizers and pesticides, to an absolute minimum. Further embracing the benefits of technology, Feudi di San Gregorio invested $20 million into a modernized cellaring facility with the capacity to house 5,000 barrels.

Feudi di San Gregorio has also invested more than $2.5 million in ongoing research projects conducted by the Universities of Naples and Milan. Studies involve issues such as identifying clones, examining the soil composition in each vineyard and determining how the soil influences each individual varietal. Vineyard management and zoning are key elements to the continued success and ever-increasing quality of Feudi di San Gregorio wines.

The Feudi di San Gregorio vineyards are managed by Pierpaolo Sirch. White winemaking is handled by Hanz Terzer, while red winemaking is overseen by Luigi Moio.
